MYCENAE: FINDS FROM THE TEMPLE COMPLEX 2

Among the numerous objects found in Room 18 and the Alcove were at least 15 snake figures made of clay which are, to date, unique in the Mycenaean world.

A single fragment of one of these snakes was found on the stairs leading to the blocked doorway of Room 18.

CLAY SNAKES PILED UP IN ROOM 18

The snakes were made from a coil of clay mounted on a flat base. They coiled both inwards and outwards and the head was often modelled in detail with bulging eyes and a protruding tongue.
